Mighty warriors

September 3, 2008

On a recent visit back to my home country New Zealand, or in native Maori, Aotearoa, I discovered some mighty faces: Maori and brave.

I enjoy Maori art – carved, painted, sculpted. The tribal history, traditions and people become part of the artist and the artist part of the art. With each line, each curve, cut or stoke, the story unwinds before your eyes. Unknowingly, you are taken on a spiritual journey.

Contemporary Maori art goes one step further:

to invigorate the onlooker with colour.

Maori carvings can be seen throughout New Zealand. From the most noticeable places: the Maori meeting houses and Marae, art galleries and souvenir shops

But also where you least expect it: standing watch outside a tourist information centre.

Yes they are striking. I love the way the faces have a presence about them. Thanks for your comments 🙂
