SangSang Madang: culture, cafes, concrete

January 14, 2009

There has to be something said about how design can work wonders with material like concrete. SangSang Madang is one such example in Seoul’s art hub – Hongdae.

SangSang Madang is a multi-complex dedicated to artists, designers and all who appreciate imagination. Six floors of artistic wonder, from cinema, to studios, art markets and cafes.  SangSang Madang opened its doors late 2007 to cultivate the growing circle of small but talented artists.

Going unnoticed is something the architects didn’t intend or include in their blueprints.

It’s about standing out from the crowd and this complex does it well. It offers visitors two cafes on both the ground and sixth floors, somewhere to indulge in a caffeine treat or shelter from the harsh cold or humidity.

Design is everywhere. Celebrating upcoming talent with spacious exhibitions, to quietly hanging the small shots – in stairwells.

SangSang Madang may not have the impact of some fine art centres in Europe or the US, but it’s a good start. A small playground for artists alike to indulge in what they do well. Even the cafe displays design in the form of lighting.

Unusual lightning, 3000 CDs to listen to and a room with a view, all add to the attraction of this top floor cafe. The only downside is the automatic espresso machine making automatic tasting coffee. Which is just as bad as instant coffee, only double the price.

To get to SangSang Madang, take subway line 2 to Hongdae University, exit 5. Or line 6 to Hapjeong Station exit 3.

It must be so nice to live in a city that has such an island of creative expression.

Nicely said Bear, yes it is fun to see how other cultures perceive things and what they do to go about expressing themselves. Only wish they would quicken up their ideas on coffee making.

I’m supposed to go there today, Sangsang Madang Live Hall, I’m not sure if it’s the same place, but there’s a metal festival going on, hope it’s the right place, I’d be surprised if they could fit that all on one story!

Brandon – let me know how you went on.
