Brunei’s guardians at the gate

March 9, 2009

Here is a small story I’d like to share with you.

Tucked next to a what looks like a parking lot, in Brunei’s capital – Bandar Seri Begawan, is a small Chinese Buddhist Temple. Sitting just inside the temple gates are its guardians in the form of dragons. In some countries these guardians come in the shape of serpents, but in this temple, dragons have historically been the symbol. Up until recently that is.

Being in a predominately Islamic nation, the Chinese temple is special to those who worship here, but there is another reason for its attraction. It appears to have recruited a new guardian symbol, a pair of living and breathing guardians. Their mission – to keep camera wheeling travellers at bay.

I encountered these guardians on a rainy monsoon morning, although they gave the illusion of being your friend, they had a hidden agenda. Once you got to know these anti camera tyrants, they turned on you.  Trouble with a capital T was written all over their faces. And trouble is what they gave me.

Trouble one:

While Trouble one was posing for this shot, Trouble two, was moving in towards the bag.

Patiently they waited for that opportunity to attack.

These furry little bundles of deceit kept coming at me. Tongue and teeth being their preferred choice of weapon.

And they succeeded in their mission. When I realised that it was impossible to shoot the inside of this quaint temple, the tyrants simply wandered off, leaving me to limp out the gate to a quiet place. Where I could lick my wounds in peace.

My only consolation was a very small glimpse of the tiger at the gate.

I know most of you will be going ahhh and ohhh, but consider this: these tyrants have teeth, sharp teeth.

the image of the tiger – is that made on tile? It reminds me of a picture I saw made completely out of feathers years ago in Calgary.

    Martinha – thanks

PB – that would have been a nice picture, out of feathers. This tiger is on tile.
